Sales jobs coordinate the efforts of a firm’s sales program. They set goals, establish sales training programs, and assign sales territories for their workers whom they supervise. Sales managers work in close proximity to the top managers. Demanding work is very common when schedules change and problems arise but goals and deadlines must still be met. Travel for sales managers may also be involved along with their attendance at association meetings and sponsored industry.

The skills and qualifications necessary for a sales job vary. Some employers would recommend having a bachelor’s or a master’s degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing or communications. Coursework in accounting, finance, mathematics, statistics, management, economics, and business law will prepare individuals for sales employment. Having great interpersonal communication skills coupled with a high computer aptitude will make for the best opportunity. Typically working 40 hour work weeks, sales  careers sometimes require working long irregular hours during times of peak business which may become demanding so questions about the details of the job should be asked to the employer. 

Sales careers are found in nearly every industry and according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there will be a 12 percent increase in employment for the decade between 2006 to 2016. This expected rate will be close to the average for all occupations. The increase in competition for products and services that are presented to consumers will create a higher demand for qualified sales jobs by employers. Job seekers that have sales  experience with a bachelor’s or master’s degree will have the best opportunity for employment as there will be competition for the best sales positions.
